For over ten years, I have been traveling all over France to introduce audiences to silent films from around the world accompanied by live improvisation. Whether on the piano, the organ, or the theatre organ, I perform at schools, libraries, festivals, and churches to share my passion for silent movie. My most recent show is titled “A Screen Full of Stars” and offers the audience a introduction to astronomy with a laser and improvisations on silent films.
An improvised piano film concert outdoors under the stars? This is my one-of-a-kind offering in France, which I’ve been presenting since the release of my book in 2024. Suitable for families and children, it’s a one-of-a-kind show where music and science engage in a humorous dialogue.
This program was created following the publication of my book "Balades célestes" in 2024 by Delachaux et Niestlé. The desire to combine my two passions seemed like a natural choice. I set out to hunt for silent films related to astronomy and stars and created a unique program combining scientific outreach with live piano improvisations.
As a graduate of the Paris Observatory (two university certificates), I’ll explain the stars and constellations, along with their legends and myths using a laser pointer in a fun and highly educational way. The goal is to connect these topics with the films shown to help your audience discover the night sky. If the weather or season doesn’t permit it, an astronomical slideshow and a planetarium session on screen are offered to help your audience discover the mysteries of the universe!
My name is Rémi Collin, and I am a composer, improviser, and jazz teacher. I stumbled into the world of film concerts by chance and discovered a fascinating universe. In 2025, I won an international first prize in composition and have specialized in providing total improvised musical accompaniment for silent films: from Georges Méliès to Harold Lloyd, including little-known films that have fallen into the public domain, I bring these gems of silent cinema to life with music. People often come up to me after the shows, impressed, and ask if everything was prepared in advance… to which I reply that no, it’s all 100% improvised live!
